Whether you are watching professional players compete or joining in on the action, the Hawaiian Islands are a year-round playground for athletes of all kinds, from surfers to golfers to Ironmen.

With its inviting Pacific waters and 750 miles of coastline, water sports are simply a way of life in Hawaii. The Hawaiian Islands are the birthplace of modern surfing and stand-up paddleboarding, and you can experience both while you’re here – either on famous surf beaches like Waikiki and Hookipa Beach, or at tournaments like Duke’s OceanFest and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. You can also watch or participate in one of Hawaii’s oldest sports, outrigger canoe racing, at prestigious events like the Queen Liliuokalani Canoe Races or Pailolo Challenge.

On dry land, Hawaii’s lush golf links host some of the most legendary names in the game, and three PGA golf tournaments call the Hawaiian Islands home. Marvel at the elite triathletes that compete in the iconic IRONMAN Triathlon each fall, or see if you can go the distance at the Honolulu, Kauai or Maui marathons. Professional tennis, NBA preseason basketball and international soccer tournaments are some of the other sporting events that will give you yet another reason to visit the Hawaiian Islands.

Honolulu Marathon (48th Annual)

26.2 miles, 385 yards or 42.195 kilometers – The Honolulu Marathon’s scenic course includes spectacular ocean views alongside world-famous Waikiki Beach, and Diamond Head and Koko Head volcanic craters. The terrain is level except for short uphill grades around Diamond Head. At the starting line is Ala Moana Beach Park where the Honolulu Marathon starts on Ala Moana Blvd, 5 a.m. finishing at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. There is no time limit and no limit on the number of participants. We wait for the last finisher to cross the line and all finishers get an official finishers shirt and awesome medal.

Maui Marathon & Half Marathon

The Maui Marathon will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2020! The Maui Marathon is the longest consecutively held running event in the state of Hawaii and is the oldest marathon west of the Mississippi River. It has been chosen as one of the top 10 Most Scenic Marathons in the nation by Runner’s World magazine (Feb. 96), and the #10 destination marathon in North America, by the Ultimate Guide to Marathons. The Maui Marathon has developed a reputation over the years as a quality running event.

This is due in great part to the many volunteers and community support generated, year after year, for this charity fundraising running event. There is a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and a full marathon relay. The full marathon and marathon relay starts in Kahului and ends in Kaanapali with scenic views along most of the course. The half marathon, 10K and 5K starts and ends in Kaanapali with beautiful ocean views along the way. Thousands of colorful athletes and personalities have participated in this event over the years and look forward to it with each coming spring. It is the Valley Isle Road Runners who have worked with the Maui community to keep this extraordinary celebration of fitness alive and thriving. Valley Isle Road Runners is especially thankful to the marathon’s sponsors including; Kaanapali Beach Hotel, our “Headquarters Hotel”, Kaanapali Beach Resort Association, The Hawaii Tourism Authority, Maui County and many more.

Molokai Canoe Festivals Presents – 7th Annual Kulaia Hoolaulea

In remembering the early years of the Molokai Hoe along with the Aloha Festivals Hoolaulea at Hale o Lono, this was Molokai’s version of kulaia. The festivities lasted an entire weekend and the spirit of aloha radiated to all; including our Molokai community, paddlers, visitors and spectators from abroad. In recent years, we have seen history repeated, where the idea of kulaia was forgotten, as the canoe race continued without the festival. Wanting to revive the spirit of the festivals here on Molokai, a grassroots community group came together and formed the Molokai Canoe Festivals whose members share

the vision of bringing back the festivals to our community and sharing the true Molokai aloha and hospitality to our visiting brothers and sisters of the paddling ohana & visitors. This practice of kulaia is an important cultural tradition in celebration of our Alii and Kupuna. KULAIA gives us an opportunity to enlighten, embrace and share the spirit of Aloha, Molokai style.

Gay Bowl XX

Gay Bowl is an annual national LGBT flag football tournament organized by the National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL) and local Hawaii Gay Flag Football League (HIGFFL). Gay Bowl XX will take place October 7-11, 2020 in Honolulu at Kapiolani Park. The tournament will draw ~1,200 players on 65 teams participating in Open A, Open B, Open C and Women’s divisions. The teams will travel to Hawaii from the 24 cities in the mainland US and Canada. We also expect 500-750 additional visitors (loved ones and family) to accompany the players and partake in the festivities and ancillary events. We welcome all potential participants, spectators, vendors and sponsors.

Paddle for Life (12th Annual)

n October 10-11th, over 300 cancer survivors and supporters will paddle six-person outrigger canoes across the Auau channel from Lahaina to Lanai, a 34-mile round trip journey, to raise funds for the Pacific Cancer Foundation in their 12th Annual Paddle for Life(link is external) fundraiser. It’s not a race… it’s a voyage, and all of our Maui Ohana are invited to join us for the event. Experience the Hawaiian Culture through paddle, ceremony, chants and a BBQ on the beach at Manele Bay! There is truly a remarkable parallel between an ocean paddling voyage and the journey experienced by cancer patients and survivors.

Both involve tremendous physical, mental and emotional strength. Both require patience and perseverance. And, ultimately, it takes a team to make the journey successful. The Pacific Cancer Foundation(link is external) is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing free support services for Maui’s cancer community. The Foundation’s mission is to provide Access, Knowledge and Support to all those affected by cancer in Maui County.

100% Pure Kona Coffee Marathon & Half Marathon

ome and join us for our fifth annual race! Run the scenic coast of Kailua-Kona down Alii Drive to the infamous “Pit” at the “End of the World”. Enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean as you complete your chosen distance of marathon or half marathon! This race begins and ends at Coconut Grove Marketplace. All runners will receive a tech race shirt and a signature coffee mug as their medal when they finish. Enjoy a cup of Kona coffee as you celebrate your run at our race finishline!

Turkey Trot

NEW FOR 2020 – We are no longer having a 16 mile course due to safety concerns, however, we have added a 5K course to our Turkey Trot!

Every Thanksgiving VIRR hosts a run up in Kula at Rice park called the Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot is a unique race where the winners are the runners who are closest to guessing their time in the 8 mile run or 5K runs, not who crosses the finish line first. No timing devices are allowed.. no cheating … Start: 8 Mile Starts at 7:00 am, 5K Starts at 7:30 am. Course: Starts and finishes at Rice Park in the parking area off of Lower Kula Rd. We will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items for the Maui Food Bank.

Kalakaua Merrie Mile

This is a fun one-mile race in Waikiki followed by a beach party. Great as a warm-up for the marathon as well as visiting friends and family. Children of all ages are welcome to run the Merrie Mile.

Starts are in waves based on predicted finish time. The last wave is the professional wave starts with invited runners going sub 4 min for the mile!

The race is named after King Kalakaua, who was known as The Merrie Monarch. The one-mile course starts at the Kapiolani Park end of Kalakaua Avenue and the turn around is by Kaiulani Ave. You’ll finish by Queens beach with a concert on the beach!

The entry fee is the same for all participants. All children must have a registered parent or guardian in the event with them. The parent/guardian must accompany the child at all times. Shirts and medals will be for paid registrations.

Strollers are welcome to start at the back-of -the pack keeping in mind that safety is first and foremost for all participants.

Christmas 5K Run & Santa’s 1/2 Mile Keiki Dash

Join us for the Christmas 5K, 1 Mile Walk, or Santa’s Half Mile Keiki Dash! We will also be collecting donations for the Maui Food Bank. Santa’s Half Mile Keiki Dash: A special race for keiki 8 years and under – starts at 7:30am. There are no bib numbers or run times for the Keiki Dash. 5K Run: More like a 5.5K, the extra .5k means extra fun! Starts at 7:35am. Note: This race will not be timed but there will be a clock set up. This is a free fun run for VIRR members. 1 Mile Walk: Starting immediately after the 5K runners leave the start line, the 1 Mile Walk starts from the parking lot and along the bike path and back. There are no bib numbers or run times. There will be a race clock for those who want their times. Non-VIRR members are welcome!

Koloa Plantation Days

Celebrate the plantation heritage and modern-day vitality of Koloa, Kauai during this 10-day family oriented festival held the last two weekends in July and the week in between on Kauai’s sunny south shore. Each year highlights a different theme. Founded in 1835, Koloa Plantation was Hawaii’s first sugar plantation, where laborers from Asia and Europe lived together in plantation camps sharing the foods, music, stories, and traditions of their homelands. Koloa Plantation Days brings visitors and residents together at over 30 events including live music,”talk stories”, cultural and keiki activities, area hikes, historic exhibits, the Koloa Plantation Days rodeo, craft fairs, a Family Fun Run and the annual Parade and Park Celebration, now celebrating its 35th year.
